Stewardship Recycling Program

Tires Recycling Program

How to Recycle Your Tires

Launched in 1992, ARMA’s tire recycling program is the second-oldest in Canada. Since then, Albertans have stepped up and helped recycle more than 149.5 million tires, diverting hundreds of thousands of tonnes of waste from landfills. Use our depot finder to find where you can recycle old tires near you.

When you bring in your tires for recycling, they are shipped to ARMA-approved Registered Tire Processors (recyclers). Registered Processors are private companies that have been audited and approved by ARMA.

Tires that can be recycled in Alberta include:

Passenger and light truck tires

Speciality, industrial, and other tires

Medium truck tires

Off-the-road (OTR) tires

Businesses can arrange for the collection of their used tires with one of ARMA’s registered processors.

Environmental fees help fund the recycling system for each stewardship program. For more detailed information (including which tires are excluded from the program), please see the products, definitions, and fees.

History of Tire Recycling in Alberta

Since 1992, Albertans and businesses have recycled more than 149.5 million tires. This is incredibly important given the significant risk discarded tires pose to our environment and overall health. They present a fire hazard that can produce toxic fumes, and when left out in the open, they can collect water and become a breeding ground for insects and bacteria. The good news is that when tires are recycled, they’re a valuable source of material that can be turned into new products and jobs.

Over
149,500,000
tires have been recycled since 1992

How are Tires Recycled?

By working closely with municipalities, tire and vehicle dealers, tire shops, and registered tire processors across Alberta, recycled scrap tires are turned into playground surfaces, sidewalk blocks, matting products, roofing tiles, and mulch for landscaping. ARMA-approved processors also produce tire-derived aggregate (TDA), where tires are turned into an engineered product that can be used in road construction projects and as drainage material in leachate collection systems by replacing conventional aggregates including expensive washed rock.

What’s more, when buying new tires, customers can usually leave their old ones behind thanks to over 2,200 vehicle and tire dealers and auto repair shops that play a dual role—selling new tires and being a primary collection point for scrap tires destined for recycling at registered recycling facilities in Alberta.

Further, ARMA does not endorse or recommend the collection, sorting, culling or grading of used tires for reuse, supply or resale. Due to the unknown condition of used tires, the reuse, supply or sale of used tires poses significant risks of tire failure that may result in damage, loss, bodily injury or death. ARMA disclaims any and all liability for any damages, losses, injuries or death arising from the reuse, supply or sale of used tires.
