Since starting the Paint Recycling Program in 2008, Albertans have recycled 36.5 million litres of paint and over 9 million spray paint cans. Use our depot finder to find where you can recycle paint near you.
When you bring in your paint and paint containers for recycling, they are shipped to ARMA-approved Registered Paint Processors (recyclers). Registered Processors are private companies that have been audited and approved by ARMA.
Paint products (including empty paint and aerosol cans) that can be recycled in Alberta include:
If your product is a bulging or leaking paint can, an unidentifiable paint or container, or paint not stored in original containers, it may not be accepted. If you are unsure, ARMA recommends contacting your local collection site to confirm if it will be accepted.
Environmental fees help fund the recycling system for each stewardship program. For more information about what paint products you can recycle, please see our comprehensive list of products, definitions, and fees.

Commercial painters and businesses (commercial generators) can use Alberta's Paint Recycling Program to recycle eligible paint and empty paint cans, diverting them from landfills.
You have three options to recycle your paint products and containers:
Launched in 2008, ARMA’s Paint Recycling Program sets an industry standard across North America for its comprehensive approach to recycling paint. Since 2015, Albertans have recycled more than 4,000 tonnes of metal and plastic paint cans using the Paint Recycling Program.
Recycled paint is processed depending on its substance. A local made-in-Alberta solution sees leftover liquid latex paint processed into new paint, while solid or semi-solid paint is used as components in cement manufacturing. Oil-based products receive new life by being added to fuel blends to create an alternative fuel source. Once brought to a collection site, metal containers are recycled into industrial products like rebar, while plastic containers are recycled into moulded products for future use.

Albertans pay an environmental fee when they purchase new paint products and containers to support the associated costs of recycling the materials. To learn more about the environmental fee for each material, review our comprehensive list of products, definitions, and fees.
