Commercial and Trade Painters

Commercial painters and businesses (commercial generators) can use Alberta's Paint Recycling Program to recycle eligible paint and empty paint cans, diverting them from landfills.

You have three options to recycle your paint products and containers:

  1. Use the depot finder to find a collection site near you.
  2. Contact a registered paint processer to arrange a pick-up or drop-off of your materials
  3. Participate in a commercial paint roundup in Calgary, Edmonton, or Red Deer.

History of Paint Recycling in Alberta

Launched in 2008, ARMA’s Paint Recycling Program sets an industry standard across North America for its comprehensive approach to recycling paint. Since 2015, Albertans have recycled more than 4,000 tonnes of metal and plastic paint cans using the Paint Recycling Program.

Over
36,500,000
litres of paint have been recycled since 2008

How is Paint Recycled?

Recycled paint is processed depending on its substance. A local made-in-Alberta solution sees leftover liquid latex paint processed into new paint, while solid or semi-solid paint is used as components in cement manufacturing. Oil-based products receive new life by being added to fuel blends to create an alternative fuel source. Once brought to a collection site, metal containers are recycled into industrial products like rebar, while plastic containers are recycled into moulded products for future use.

Environmental Fees for Paint

Albertans pay an environmental fee when they purchase new paint products and containers to support the associated costs of recycling the materials. To learn more about the environmental fee for each material, review our comprehensive list of products, definitions, and fees.
