Electronics Recycling Program

How To Recycle Your Electronics

In 2004, ARMA launched Canada’s first Electronics Recycling Program. Since then, this program has expanded to include more than 500 types of products. Use our depot finder to find where you can recycle electronics near you.

When you bring in your electronics for recycling, they are shipped to ARMA-approved Registered Electronics Processors (recyclers). Registered Processors are private companies that have been audited and approved by ARMA.

Electronics that can be recycled in Alberta include:

Computers and servers

Laptops, tablets, and notebooks (portable computers)

Printers, copiers, scanners, and fax machines

Home small appliances

AV, telecom, toys, and music

Tools, lawn, and garden

Visual display and all-in-one devices

Environmental fees help fund the recycling system for each stewardship program. For more information about what electronics you can recycle, please see our comprehensive list of products, definitions, and fees.

Corporate and Institutional Electronics Recycling Program

Old electronics take up valuable office space and pose potential security risks. With ARMA’s corporate and institutional electronics recycling program, you can recycle your electronics safely and securely. Use our depot finder to identify a recycling depot near you.

Are you interested in using your electronics to raise funds for your initiative? Get your school, team, or club involved with the Electronics Recycling Roundup. The Electronics Recycling Roundup is designed to encourage schools, non-profit organizations, and community groups to increase awareness and ease of recycling while raising funds for their organization (or on behalf of an organization). Learn more about our Roundup programs.

History of Electronics Recycling in Alberta

Launched in 2004, ARMA’s Electronics Recycling Program was the first in Canada to recycle computer equipment, televisions, and select office equipment. These materials are often mistaken as “e-waste,” but they actually have significant value!

On April 1, 2025, this program expanded by more than 500 materials, including power tools, microwaves, and musical instruments. This move built on the success of ARMA’s ePilot program, which launched in 2020 and allowed Albertans to recycle a broader range of electronics. By expanding the program, Alberta took a valuable step toward reducing waste and creating a more sustainable future.

In addition to everyday electronics, Alberta is leading the way in recycling renewable energy materials, too. The province will be the first in Canada to develop programs for recycling solar panels, electric vehicle (EV) batteries, and wind turbine electrical components. As renewable energy continues to grow, these programs will be essential to managing waste and promoting environmental responsibility.

The expansion of the Electronics Recycling Program and the development of renewable energy recycling initiatives are key to building Alberta’s circular economy. With support from the Government of Alberta and industry stakeholders, ARMA is helping to ensure that Albertans can responsibly recycle both current and future technologies, creating a cleaner, greener province.

How are Electronics Recycled?

When recycled, components from electronics, including different metals, glass, and plastics, are used to create new consumer products. Recycling also allows hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium, beryllium, and antimony to be safely and properly handled, keeping them out of landfills.

Environmental Fees for Electronics

Albertans pay an environmental fee when they purchase new electronics. These fees range from $0.30 to $2.75 and support the associated costs of recycling electronics.
